Death Metal Concerts and Fanbase

Panophobia - The Agonist
Concerts

Death metal concerts are the most intense concerts in regards to crowd density and physical contact. Zone one was densely packed, approximately fifty people were in the first ninety square feet of the venue. In the beginning of the concert there had been a metal guardrail between the stage and the audience but shortly after the performance began it was knocked down. This concert was an indoor concert at a small venue so there were only about 200 people in the audience. Once the barrier was knocked down the audience could get close enough to the stage to touch the band members if they reached out to them. On occasion a band member would throw out a memento, such as a guitar pic of a drum stick, into zone one and the audience members would fight to retrieve it.

Zone two is almost exclusively moshing, Death Metal concerts are known for being the most intense when it comes to the mosh pits. The mosh pit was comprised of a ring of about thirty individuals which spanned about thirteen feet across. There were between twelve and sixteen people in the mosh pit at any given time. Once an individual wanted to take a break from moshing they would move to the outer ring and be replaced by one of the individuals forming the circle. The extra space that wasn’t utilized by the mosh pit was used for equipment, such as speakers. The venue was also kind enough to set up a refreshment area that had water available to the attendees, this was set up in the front of the room, near the stage. Opposite the water area was the merchandise store, where audience members could purchase memorabilia from the bands to commemorate the event.

Zone three was a bit hard to identify, in this venue it had a twenty-one and up area that was raised above the main concert floor. This area held the bar, so the audience members that occupied this space were the ones that wished to drink and avoid the physical contact that is unavoidable on the main floor.

Another point worth mentioning is the difference between indoor and outdoor events. Outdoor events spread the zones of participation to beyond twice what they usually are. The total number of attendees is usually between five hundred and five thousand individuals based on the venue, if a larger venue is available there can be even more audience members. This allows for multiple mosh pits that are also larger in zone two. It also allows zone three members to spread out at the edges of the crowd to visit stalls and relax.

Fan Base

The most abundant form of audience member at these concerts are sixteen to twenty two year old white males. However, females, younger (thirteen to fifteen) and older individuals (twenty three to thirty five) do attend, they just form a much smaller ratio to the young white males. I hypothesize that this ratio is based off of the political ideologies represented in the lyrics of Metal and specifically Death Metal bands. These bands have a heavy emphasis on the culturally ostracized topics in their lyrics, anything from necrophilia to political anarchy. This isn’t always a bad thing, these bands aren’t condoning acts such as necrophilia and mutilation rather they are using them for the shock value that comes from straight-edge people when they listen to it. However, topics that exemplify anti-repression, anti-war, and anti-plutocracy, are addressing issues that the artists see in the society that they live in and it is more like a call to arms. Which appeals to teenage and young adult activists that want to know that someone else has the same ideals that they do. In addition to these there are audience members that go to these concerts specifically for the sound and energy exhibited by the band and audience members.
