Symphonic Metal Concerts and Fanbase

Unleashed - Epica
Concerts

Symphonic Metal musicians seem gifted in their ability to play off of their audience’s energy. When the crowd seems tired or less interested the group will play a slow song in order to calm the audience. Then immediately play an upbeat song to get the energy levels and interest back up. Overall the energy level of the crowd seems steadier than other Metal concerts. While the audience members seem to not be as energetic as with other concerts, there is more overall participation in activities like moshing and dancing. In addition to this there is also a much smaller portion of individuals that are exhausting themselves in the crowd because of the steadier activity level. Like many other small venues this concert was held indoors. As a result of this there was a build-up of body heat and many audience members elected to take clothing off rather than leave their position in the crowd.

Due to the smaller venue there were also less audience members there, approximately one hundred and twenty in total. This means that zone one was made up of around fifty individuals crammed into an area that was close to sixty square feet. However, this example of zone one was probably the least dense out of any samples that I had viewed. Members in this area were able to move and interact more freely than participants in zone one at Metal and Death Metal concerts.

As stated above the overall energy of the audience was rather steady throughout the whole concert. This lead to mosh pits that were more controlled and less hectic in zone two. To make up for this lack of energy there were far more individuals in the pit. The mosh pit was comprised of everyone not in zone one and not drinking so there were approximately fifty people around the circumference of the circle. This particular pit was around twelve feet across and had between ten and fifteen moshers in it at any given time. Once an individual was done with the pit they were free to leave and be replaced by one of the attendees in the outer ring.

Unlike the Death Metal concert this venue had the zone three area on the same level as zones one and two. This allowed the individuals that had been drinking to intersperse into the crowd of non-drinkers. This ended badly for one individual who tried to grope a female mosher and ended up losing a tooth and was immediately removed from the pit. Zone three had approximately twenty people in it at any given time and was monitored by an older gentleman who seemed to be enjoying the performance as much as the rest of the audience.

Fan Base

Contrary to The Agonist's concert the largest portion of the audience was white males between the ages of eighteen and twenty five years old. There was also a higher number of females in attendance, which is probably a result of the representation of females as vocalists in Symphonic Metal music. There was also a larger overall age range at this concert, the gentleman attending zone three was approximately forty years old and he seemed as enthusiastic about the music as everyone else in that zone.  According to a member of the audience the appeal is greatly based in the sound of the bands, the melodic sound pared with the harsh instrumental parts gives Symphonic Metal a sound that is unmatched in beauty. In addition to this the audience member mentioned the appeal can also be tied to the topics in the lyrics, “It’s not superficial like pop music is, for example Cry For The Moon is about child abuse in the Catholic church and Deter the Tyrant is about western support for Muarmmar Gaddafi.”
